Why does a fire engine respond on medical calls?

You may see a fire engine arrive with our ambulance on a medical emergency. This allows our crews to split up and remain prepared should another emergency occur at the same time.

How do you decide whether to respond with lights and sirens?

Thanks to an algorithm that the 911 Communication Center uses when a person calls in an incident, we are often told by the dispatcher whether an incident requires a “code” response. It is also left to the discretion of the crew leader. We understand that your request may still classify as an emergency even if we do not arrive with lights and sirens, we do our best to weigh the risks of driving emergent.

What should I do when an emergency vehicle is approaching displaying emergency lights and sirens?

Calmly pull to the right shoulder or curb and stop, when safe to do so. Even if the emergency vehicles are driving in the opposite direction of you, it is still important to stop and pull over, as they may need to make a turn in front of you or drive in the lane of oncoming traffic.
